On October 23, the Dongfeng Fengshen L8+ was officially launched. As soon as the price came out, several of my friends who have been looking at family SUVs came to ask me: with a limited-time trade-in price of 129,900 to 159,900 yuan, and the 700TOPS computing power version starting at 149,900 yuan, can you really buy 700TOPS intelligent driving for under 150,000? This has to start with that livestream on CCTV.

CCTV moved the test ground to the 108 turns of Mount Everest: high cold, low oxygen, no signal, no lane markings, no high-precision maps, with gravel roads, water crossings, washboard roads, cliffside parking, livestock blocking the road, and truck passing all included, and the Fengshen L8+ completed the entire run with zero takeovers. You can say this is showing off its muscles, but daring to livestream a run through extreme scenarios at least shows that this system did not falter. For ordinary users, what matters more than specs is whether it can stay stable on real roads.

700TOPS + Momenta R7, intelligent driving is not a futures product

The Fengshen L8+ is the world's first to feature Tianyuan Intelligent Driving T800, with hardware built on the NVIDIA Thor-U 700TOPS chip, making it the only intelligent-driving SUV under 150,000 with 700TOPS of computing power. The official claim is that its computing power reaches 3.5 times that of mainstream models in the same class and can support software iterations for the next five years. In my view, high computing power is the foundation, but do not mythologize the number; what truly determines the experience is algorithms, data, and tuning.

In terms of algorithms, Tianyuan Intelligent Driving T800 integrates the Momenta R7 world model, and the official claim is that its capability rivals Huawei Qian ADS Max. At present, mid-to-high-end products such as the Volkswagen ID.ERA9X, Mercedes-Benz GLC, and Cadillac XT5 PHEV are among the first to carry it, and some models still have to wait for OTA. The Fengshen L8+ does not need to wait; it is available on the car right away—do not underestimate the words "no need to wait for OTA." For many cars, after you buy them, you have to wait half a year for intelligent-driving functions, and the user experience is completely different.

More critically, it uses 700TOPS of computing power to connect four major domains: intelligent driving, chassis, powertrain, and smart cabin. It is the industry's first intelligent-driving whole-vehicle tuning, with acceleration that does not drag, deceleration that is more linear, and steering that is more precise, specifically solving motion sickness caused by intelligent driving. This approach is right: intelligent driving is not a separate module; it must work in coordination with the whole vehicle, and only if it is comfortable to ride in will people dare to use it often.

It can park by itself and run rural NOA; everyday scenarios are the real test ground

The Fengshen L8+ supports true parking-space-to-parking-space intelligent driving, starting with one click from the origin parking space, autonomously entering and exiting parking lots, and automatically parking at the destination, with zero takeovers throughout. Parking supports remote parking and self-defined line parking, as well as cross-floor memory parking for up to 3 kilometers, up to 7 floors, and up to 10 routes. It can park in extremely narrow spaces, dead-end spaces, and unmarked spaces; if there is no parking space, it can draw one itself and park, making it arguably the No.1 parking system in the 150,000 class. For family users, parking is more frequent than highway NOA, and these functions are the real pain points.

It also has full-domain mapless NOA, getting rid of dependence on high-precision maps. It can drive on highways and in cities wherever there is a road, and can also be used in remote villages and the countryside, which is why it is called "rural NOA," and the official claim is that it is the safest SUV for long trips. In the 20 test items of "Intelligent Driving Test Evening Rush Hour," the Fengshen L8+ passed all of them, becoming the first full-score contestant in the program's three years, and the test ground was moved from Beijing to 8D Chongqing, making it even harder. A U-turn on a narrow two-lane road is completed smoothly with one extra reverse; in urban villages with mixed pedestrians and vehicles, it can borrow lanes, yield, and squeeze through gaps; within 140 km/h on the highway, simultaneous dual tire blowouts on the same side do not cause loss of control or tail sliding. These scenarios are not needed in daily life, but at critical moments they can save lives.

4-speed electric hybrid + five-piece luxury set, covering the rigid needs of long-distance families

In terms of power, the Fengshen L8+ is equipped with a 4-speed Mach electric hybrid, with engine thermal efficiency of 45.18%. A 30.3kWh battery brings CLTC pure electric range of 220 km and combined range of over 1,500 km, with no need to recharge en route from Chengdu to Lhasa. The official claim is that power rivals a 3.0T combustion engine and does not degrade even in thin high-altitude air. For families who enjoy road trips, long range and undiminished high-altitude power are more practical than zero-to-100 acceleration.

In terms of comfort, cloud-soft large sofa, rear ceiling-mounted entertainment screen, rear heating and cooling box, aviation-style small table, and 19-speaker WANOS panoramic sound system make up the "five-piece luxury set," along with a heated capacitive steering wheel, driver and front passenger seat memory, welcome function, ventilation, and heating for all seats front and rear. The China Automotive Technology and Research Center has certified it as a "zero formaldehyde" healthy cabin, and with Tianyuan OS2.0, for families with elderly people and children, health is more tangible than one more screen.

Safety is the underlying foundation of central SOE Dongfeng. The Mach battery adopts 1200MPa military-vehicle-grade armored protection, with safety standards far exceeding the new national standard: no fire, no leakage, no explosion. It also offers a three-electric spontaneous combustion backstop guarantee of "no limit on the first owner, no limit on mileage." This backstop condition is rare in the industry, and second-hand car owners also benefit, which shows Dongfeng has confidence in battery safety.

Final thoughts

The 150,000-class SUV market is highly competitive, but most competition revolves around price and equipment lists. What the Fengshen L8+ competes on is the implementation of intelligent driving and comfort experience: 700TOPS computing power + Momenta R7 fully available on the car right away, zero takeovers in CCTV's livestream of the 108 turns of Mount Everest, full marks in the Intelligent Driving Test Evening Rush Hour, 4-speed electric hybrid with long range, the five-piece luxury set, plus the three-electric spontaneous combustion backstop. It breaks the convention that "high-level equals high price," bringing 300,000-class intelligent driving and comfort experience down to the 150,000 class, and can truly be called a "dual flagship of intelligent driving and comfort."

Of course, whether a product is good or not ultimately has to be decided by users. Brand awareness and channel service still need further improvement for Fengshen. But at least in terms of product strength, price, and backstop policy, the Fengshen L8+ has set an example for 150,000-class family SUVs: high-level intelligent driving should not be exclusive to models above 300,000, and ordinary families deserve to have it too. If your budget is 150,000 and you want an SUV with good intelligent driving, comfortable seating, and no long-distance anxiety, I suggest going to a store for a test drive—specs are specs, experience is experience.
